VICTOR PAPANEK & SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE DESIGN

Victor Papanek was a revolutionary of his time. He is responsible for introducing sustainability to design. Born in 1923 in Vienna, Austria, Victor Papanek was an immigrant from the Nazi regime to the USA in 1939. Victor Papanek was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and wrote and book in 1971 entitled “Design For The Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change”. This book created waves of controversy in the design world due to his beliefs in socially responsible design, and to this day is one of the most read design books ever. Social Responsibility ended up becoming what he was truly known for. The concept in itself is idea that designers should take responsibility for how their designs and the process used to create those designs, effects the environment and the world around them. Victor Papanek worked directly with UNESCO and the World Health Organization in order to aid in improving the quality of life of people in third world nations with his designs.

Overall, Mr. Papanek was just trying to do his part in making sure that the people of the world who have less simply because they were born into poverty were taken care of by those who had the ability to do something about it. This cemented his legacy as a man who cared for humanity and its future and made sure that it will continue to improve itself as a species far into the future.
